Basics of Table Editing
in AXIS Users Guide - Working With Tables

To edit a Table in a Cell, you must open it first by double-clicking the Table Name, or by right-clicking the Name and selecting the Edit option from the action menu. You may open multiple Tables at the same time. Refer to Selecting and Viewing Tables for more information.

There are various methods of entering and editing Table contents within AXIS, including direct entry, Windows copy and paste, enhanced Copy Special and Paste Special command options, Range Options commands, Table Options commands, and Buffer Options commands. In addition, you may generate tables from within AXIS, or export and import tables from external files and applications.

Direct Entry of Table data

Once the Table is opened, you may move the cursor to any Table value by cursor movement commands or by using the mouse and then type a new value using the keyboard. Values entered will replace the current value once the cursor is moved to another location or the Enter key is pressed. Pressing the Esc key however will cancel the Edit operation and revert to the previous value.

If you wish to edit the digits in the current value instead of entering a new value, move the cursor to the value to be edited and press F2. The current value, including all decimal digits stored, will be displayed for editing and the insertion point will be placed at the end of the value. You may edit by inserting, deleting, typing, and cursor movement keys. You may also cut, copy and paste using standard Windows shortcut commands.

To erase or delete single values, press the Del key after moving the cursor to the value, or right click on the value and select Clear contents from the Action menu. To delete a range of values, first highlight the range by clicking and dragging with the mouse, clicking on a row or colomn header, or by using the Shift key with cursor movement keys. Then press the Del key, or right click within the selected range and choose Clear contents from the Action menu.

Note that clearing a value is equivalent to defining it as zero, and you may thus set a single value or a range to zeros as another way to erase. You may choose to display zeros instead of blanks for zeros by selecting Format / Preferences from the Menu Bar while editing the Table.

Windows Copy and Paste

The Windows clipboard is available for cut, copy and paste operations both for numeric data in tables. Numbers may be copied within AXIS, or to and from external spreadsheets and documents.

Cut, copy and paste options may be selected from the Edit Menu in the Menu Bar, from action button menus such as the Range Options button while editing tables, and from the action menu opened by clicking the right button on the mouse. The cut, copy and paste actions may also be executed directly by clicking on the appropriate button in the optional Tool Bar or by using the Windows standard shortcut key combinations (<Ctrl> X, <Ctrl> C and <Ctrl> V respectively).

To select a range for copying, first highlight the range by clicking and dragging with the mouse, clicking on a row or colomn header, or by using the Shift key with cursor movement keys. You may also modify a selected range by using the powerful Modify Selection option in the Action menu that appears by right-clicking on a cell or in a selected range. The Modify Selection form allows you to specify the range using column numbers, and attained ages or row numbers, to produce a non-rectangular range.

Copy Special and Paste Special

AXIS offers enhanced copy and paste options that are applied using the Copy Special and Paste Special options in the Action Menu that appears when you right-click within the Table. The Paste Special is also found in the Range Options action menu.

Copy Special is a set of four commands that allows you to copy the entire table to the Windows clipboard with or without row headers, column headers, or both row and column headers. This allows you to paste the table contents to an external application and include the header information to help in interpreting and using the data in the other application. Header information is not available to be pasted into other Tables within AXIS.

Paste Special is a set of six commands that allow you to apply the contents of the clipboard to the selected value or range of values without replacing the values. Options including adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing the selected value or range by the clipboard contents and also taking the lower or higher of selected values and clipboard contents.
